At Vision Literacy, the only accredited literacy organization under ProLiteracy America in the Southern San Francisco Bay area, we deal with this issue.
Here in 'Silicon Valley,' the birthplace of many revolutionary, high-tech companies, many of us are wel educated. But, how many of us are even slightly aware of those for whom the above picture is not a question of poor eyesight, but something much larger for those who can't comprehend what the picture depicts. At Vision Literacy, we help to put this "incomprehensible picture" within their reach. In this ever-changing world, where new technologies and concepts emerge almost daily, illiteracy is a state that needs immediate attention.
In the traditional sense, literacy is associated with the ability to read. But a broader definition of the word, in today's world, includes the possession of skills needed to function in a particular environment. Researchers, F. Dubin and N. A. Kuhlman (1992) in their work, acknowledge that literacy means competence, knowledge and skills. At Vision Literacy, we deal with all three and have services for language, health, leadership, community, family and computer literacy.
At Vision Literacy, we take a top-down approach, focusing on adult literacy. We believe that "values can be caught, not taught." By giving a literate adult to the community, we are creating literate children, who are in touch with that adult - a two for one process, with determined and planned effort.
Literacy is contagious! Let's spread it around! Join us in this satisfying and meaningful cause. Your one small effort could light up someone's life enough for the picture to make sense.
