Correction Literacy Program

Statistics reveal that some 70% of inmates in correctional facilities lack basic literacy skills. Vision Literacy has provided tutoring sessions for men and women inmates in Santa Clara County correctional facilities since 1990.

Funded by the Santa Clara County Department of Correction, the Vision Literacy Corrections Literacy program takes place at the Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas.

Inmates study phonics, spelling, reading comprehension, writing, and GED preparation with Vision Literacy tutors. They also learn how to complete a job application, read a book to a child and write a letter.

Correctional tutors receive standard community tutor training from vision literacy. Subsequently they attend a special two-hour orientation conducted by Vision Literacy staff and a correctional officer.

Vision Literacy matches community and peer tutors with inmate learners. Volunteers also help operate minimum-security libraries for men and women at Elmwood Correctional Facility.
