VISION LITERACY BOARD PRESIDENT RECEIVES JUNIOR LEAGUE’S CRYSTAL BOWL AWARD
Steven Toy Recognized for His Commitment to Adult Literacy in Santa Clara County
Milpitas, Calif. – May 2, 2011 – Vision Literacy, a nationally recognized nonprofit corporation providing literacy services for adults throughout Santa Clara County, today announced that Steven Toy, President of Vision Literacy’s board of directors, is the recipient of a Crystal Bowl award from the Junior League of San Jose. Mr. Toy was recognized for his volunteer efforts at Vision Literacy, helping to transform the organization into the foremost adult literacy organization in the region.
A Crystal Bowl award was presented to Mr. Toy at the Junior League’s 42nd Annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon, held April 29 at the Santa Clara Convention Center. Attending this event were over 500 community members representing nearly 50 volunteer organizations in Santa Clara County.
“Crystal Bowl winners represent the best of the best in community involvement, and Steve certainly is the embodiment of such involvement,” said Pat Lawson-North, Executive Director of Vision Literacy. “To say this award is much-deserved understates the tremendous contribution he’s made – from how the corporation now operates to his tireless advocacy of adult literacy. We at Vision Literacy are all very proud of Steve and thankful for his role in making our organization the success it’s become.”
Mr.Toy is credited with modernizing Vision Literacy’s operations, whose information systems now incorporate state-of-the-art solutions used in training volunteer tutors, delivering access to instructional resources, and in measuring progress. He’s also applied his Internet expertise to expand Vision Literacy’s website and social media into broadly informative, interactive platforms enabling visitors to more easily get involved in the organization, whether as sponsors or volunteers.
Presently the President of Beema, Inc., a digital marketing company he founded which helps small and mid-size companies use technology to communicate their messages, Mr. Toy brings to Vision Literacy decades of management experience. He has held executive positions in sales, finance and business development in a range of high-technology market segments. Mr. Toy also has served on the board of directors for Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts, the state’s largest organization of literacy volunteers.
Vision Literacy is a nationally recognized 501(c) (3) nonprofit corporation that helps Santa Clara County adults build their literacy skills to achieve self sufficiency. Vision Literacy is the only literacy organization in Silicon Valley to be accredited by ProLiteracy America -- a nationwide, 1000-member-program literacy organization.
