Family Literacy Program

Vision Literacy has designed the Family Literacy Programs to instill a love of reading in both parents and children.

It is easy to understand why many adult learners choose to enroll in a literacy program: they want to read to their children, help them with schoolwork, and communicate in writing with school administrators and teachers.

Vision Literacy's Family Literacy Program helps participants to:

  • Create a cycle of literacy within the family
  • Improve academic achievement
  • Become more actively involved with children's schools
  • Promote a safer home environment where adults can read
directions for cleaning products and medicine

As they meet with staff and tutors, participants may receive specialized instruction on how to use the library, select children's literature and build children's pre-reading skills. Family literacy events have also included story times, puppet shows, book giveaways and field trips.

"It is really hard to have a well-educated population of children if they go home to parents who do not have adequate reading skills."
- Dale Lipschutz, President of the National Coalition for Literacy

First 5 EAST Initiative Projects
The EAST Initiative focuses on children and families in 3 elementary school attendance areas: Arbuckle Clyde, Cesar Chavez and San Antonio schools in San Jose, California zip code 95116. Parents who have children 0 - 5 years old or have children who attend these schools are eligible to participate in our programs. The goal is to offer a learning environment to prepare parents for greater involvement at their child's school. The more comfortable that a parent feels at their child's school will encourage active participation in their child's ongoing education.

Funding is provided by First 5 Santa Clara County which supports the healthy development of children through age 5 and enriches the lives of their families and communities.
