Laying the Groundwork
Vision Literacy is proud to offer adult literacy programs throughout Santa Clara County. The demand for adult literacy education has never been greater. As reported by the National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL) the number of adults with low reading , writing, comprehension and math skills are more likely to be unemployed, incarcerated, unable to support the learning needs of their children and unable to meet demanding healthcare needs to be self-sufficient. Vision Literacy is designed to service adults interested in improving their English skills – conversation, reading, writing, comprehension and basic math. It is a volunteer-based program which offers classes, small group and 1 on 1 tutoring.
The Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS) the most widely used system for assessing adult basic reading, math, listening writing and speaking skills with a functional context.
Vision Literacy uses CASAS data to measure progress and document learner outcomes and report program impact.

Becoming an adult literacy tutor is a wonderful experience. Many times a tutor will tell us they feel they are getting more from the tutoring experience than they are giving.
Vision Literacy, with twenty-five years experience, realizes that training volunteer tutors in basic concepts and providing resources to be successful are essential for tutors to find the tutoring experience rewarding. Therefore, we are continually reviewing, refining, and updating the training to ensure that we are offering, dynamic, effective and accessible training programs and materials.
